It's Not Too Late: YSC, Day 160: Brianna

Prompt: "Your least favorite holiday song, played waaaaay too early in the year"

Selected by Brianna

"Blue Christmas"
Elvis Presley
Elvis' Christmas Album, 1957

Like most things gone awry these days, the issue of premature holiday celebration lies in consumer culture.

If this whole debate was merely a conversation of people decorating their house or playing holiday music for their own enjoyment, because they enjoyed the holiday and found joy in it, by all means, I'd be on the side of the joyful.

But we all know this is not what it's about. It's about walking into Target looking for the leftover, clearance shelf Halloween candy and finding it already scrapped for their winter holidays display. It's about the bombardment of sales ads, flaunting never-been-lower prices on products that were definitely about that same price this time last month. It's the sheer BUY THIS energy at every turn, because the world apparently revolves around the idea that showing love is spending money. It's the bulletshittery of it all that I just cannot buy into. Not in November at least.

And then you got our old pal Elvis over here. Maybe it's the Priscilla viewing recent bias still lingering in me, but maybe the guy deserved a "Blue Christmas"—you know what I mean?
