It's Not Too Late: YSC, Day 156: Brianna

Prompt: "The best fucking song of 2004"

"All These Things That I've Done"
Hot Fuss, 2004

Oh, 2004, what a year.

Facebook launched, knocking down the first domino in what I believe to be the chain of events leading us to last week butwe'renottalkingaboutthatrightnow. The ladies were down bad, with Martha Stewart being sent behind bars and Janet Jackson's infamous wardrobe malfunction. Same sex marriage is legalized in the first state in the country, and the Boston Red Six won the World Series.

But let's get real. There's only one event that matters. One that changed the lives of so many, so significantly. No, I'm not talking about Doubleya winning his second term and Doubleya-ing down on the invasion of Iraq.

I'm talking about the premiere of Lost. The single greatest television show ever made.

Shane and I are currently in the midst of our umpteenth rewatch over the past seven years, and every episode or two, I turn to him with the same look on my face. How is this still so fucking good? The world has changed a lot in the past twenty years, cultural tastes and preferences very far from excluded in this, and yet Lost holds its own even now. Maybe it's the veil of mystery rustled at every big reveal, or the ensemble cast all operating at career bests.

Although it's probably at the center of many a critic's harshest takes, I think the longevity here lies in the writing. Put twenty very flawed people on an island, add some question marks to be solved, slowly connect the dots. Then, one extra step: start connecting to dots you didn't even know were there in the first place. Call it genius or nonsensical, but you cannot tell me it wasn't great television.
