Yearlong Song Challenge, Day 159: Allison

Prompt: "A song about keeping warm"

Selected by Allison

"Blacking Out the Friction"
The Photo Album, 2001

Wake up, wake up, the world is on fire. No, wait, it's only New Jersey. Acrid smoke is seeping into your bedroom. Shut the windows; fresh air is a luxury. Wear a mask when you walk the dog. A concerned man asks what is on fire. Only New Jersey. Wear a mask at the grocery store to show you're not one of them. Buy more masks. Get used to masking again. Maybe it will rain today. Maybe it'll rain again. Maybe it won't. Make stock. Make soup. Mom is calling. Don't answer. Scroll, scroll, scroll. Worry, worry, worry. Write, write, write.

"Get used to masking again." Man, you could take this phrase in about three different ways, and they'd all be poignant and true.
