Yearlong Song Challenge, Day 7: Rachel S.

Prompt: "The first song you ever heard (maybe?)"

Selected by Rachel S.

"The River of Dreams"
Billy Joel
River of Dreams, 1993

I can't recall the first song I ever heard, other than a lullaby, or more likely a Christmas song, since I'm a November baby. However, what does come to mind with this prompt though, is the first "radio" song I remember learning and singing out loud to myself, which is "The River of Dreams" by Billy Joel. It came out in 1993, so I was in Kindergarten or first grade by then. I have a very distinct memory of singing this song on the playground at Hancock Elementary School. Specifically in the wintertime, bundled up and playing on the cold metal playground and crunchy dead leaves.

"Why would someone be walking in the middle of the night?" I probably wondered. Seems pretty unsafe if you ask me, a first-grade and first-rate teacher's pet. Looking back as a now 37-year-old (ouch), I'd say it's a pretty existential song for little Rachel to be singing. Checks out.
