An imperfect but effective way to determine whether or not a song is any good is to listen to it on repeat. Any song that can hold water on a fifth+ consecutive listen is a seaworthy one, and could blossom into a favorite if given the correct care. Old favorites, given seed when the soil of the mind was fresh, will sprout annually, requiring no attention or maintenance. These are the weedy, prickling, sprawling weeds of the garden of the heart. When the soil begins to lose its minerals and starts to become a more treacherous landscape for plant life, new light patterns and watering strategies must be implemented. This must be done so that the strong grow adhesive roots and the week be carried away in the rain storm.

This is what the "listen to the song on repeat" thing can also do to you when dealing with a song as short and inessential as "New Lords," which is the title track to the album of the same name from 2022, which was selected to adhere to the prompt which is being followed for reasons that are not now and perhaps never were clear. It's 76 seconds long and you could make the case that anything contained within the album can be found within this song—breakdowns, shouting gang vocals, riffs that oscillate from "chug" to "shred"—but more than anything, it's just a nice way for a bunch of New York hardcore dudes to yell "New lords!" before the next song starts. You're not supposed to rip this shit on repeat. Hardcore rules, but there are maybe five songs in the whole catalog that can sustain this kind of microscopic focus, and this shit ain't one of 'em. Moving on.
