Yearlong Song Challenge, Day 12: Bridget

Prompt: "The title track to an album"

Selected by Bridget

"Welcome to the Black Parade"
My Chemical Romance

I'm so surprised it's taken me this long to bring up a band from the pop-punk/emo scene! The last book I read in 2023 was Where Are Your Boys Tonight?: The Oral History of Emo's Mainstream Explosion, and I cannot stop listening to the songs of my youth! To me, The Black Parade is truly one of the best albums of that era. It is prolific, a no-skip album, and reminds me of being young and dumb and loving black eyeliner. I think reading this book really helped me understand more about MCR and where they were all at when writing this album as well as touring with it. Gerard Way was recently sober and poured his heart and soul into it, while his brother Mikey was on a downward spiral with substance use. It's a concept album with the main character viewing death as their fondest memory, seeing a marching band as a child. How fascinating! It is such a banger of a song, such a banger of a music video, and an absolute banger of an album. That being said, I can't recommend that book enough to anyone who went through an emo phase!

When I eventually get around to ranking my Top 100 Songs of All Time, there's a decent chance that this song could be #1. Top Three is a lock.

Also: in an effort to not repeat, your song choice here has made me pivot hard for Day 16.
