Prompt: "The title track to an album"
Selected by Frank
"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"
The Beatles
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, 1967
What I like about this title song is the lack of irony. The Beatles didn't wryly name their album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, take a picture in old timey band stand guard, and then never reference it and make just a standard pop album. They named it Sgt. Pepper's and then they made a whole song with a nonsense narrative about Sgt. Pepper and Billy Shears, and all the other quirky Dance Hall characters who pop up over the course of the album. They sincerely made a corny-ass universe, and in leaning in 100% into what feels like Paul's sensibilities of upbeat clever pop over John's rock and roll, made one of their top three albums (depending on who you talk to), and paved the way for all concept albums over the next fifty years.
