Album of the Week: Overthinking Everything

I was asked the other day who the fuck the rapper from Cameo was that did a Song Challenge entry, and I had to embarrassingly explain that this was actually his second PoYB appearance via Cameo, and that the first one was when Record Club covered his sub-five-minute album, and it made me think that I tend to forget that not everyone is as obsessed with this blog as I am, and maybe some of the inside jokes and obscure references are not important to everyone or anyone else. Which is fine. I get it. Doesn't mean I'm gonna stop giving Famoe money for videos, $2 at a time.

PRONOUNS: frontman Ryan Nolen is he/him/his

ABOUT: Ryan Nolen picked up the guitar in middle school, but it wasn't until he attended San Diego State in the early '10s that he started to make music. At that point, it was still just a hobby. Eventually, though, he moved to Chicago, and caught the attention of musician snow ellet, and later, The Academy Is... bassist Adam Siska. This section is short today because the story is just beginning (and because there is no Wikipedia page or RYM page).

DISCOGRAPHY: This is their debut album! There was an EP previously.

WATCHING SOME SHIT: The release show, seven months ago (before the album was released the first time)

PREVIOUSLY ON RECORD CLUB: Took me a minute to make the connection, but I'm 99% sure that the name "Footballhead" is a Hey Arnold! reference. That would mean it shares a connection with Ween's The Mollusk, which inspired the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, another Nicktoon. There are also other cartoons in the history of Record Club—Gorillaz and McGruff the Crime Dog are cartoons; In Love with a Ghost presented themself as a cartoon; the album Life in Cartoon Motion—but the Nicktoon thing is the strongest connection today, I think.
