"Naked as We Came"
Our Endless Numbered Days, 2004

I attended a really great workshop as a part of my office's Social Work Month Programming. The speaker, who was great, talked about the use of self in our work with clients. One of the first things she said was that we bring two unique things to the work, one being our education, and another being our use of self. The idea is that the way we interact with clients, the way we think about them and feel about them mostly has nothing to do with the clients, but how we relate to them based on our own past experiences and identities. This can be expanded to all relationships we have, but it's more important to focus on the use of self in relationships where you hold power. So in this sense, we are not naked as we come in the way of being a clean, unbiased slate no matter how hard we try to rid ourselves of biases. The point of use of self is being radically honest about our biases and constantly interrogating how they show up in our work and relationships with our clients.
