This is the first time I'm writing a review for Record Club where I feel intimidated. Usually I just write stuff and see what sticks. Kacey Musgraves, though. The darling of everyone, a crossover star who just performed on SNL who is actually really good!
I don't feel like I have the music writing chops to do this justice. Still. I think this is a really good album. "Cardinal" is such a good song. "I'm saying goodbye to the people who are really good at wasting my time." Advice I can live by! I really admire how she's not trying to be too cute with the lyrics; she's just putting them all out on the table for everyone to see. Yes, she had a divorce. The lyrics in general are pretty sad. I can't get enough of them and their honesty and their sweetness. Part of me wonders if the lyrics came first, then the music. There are some songs that really stand out, but overall this comes together as a cohesive unit really well.
Overall, I would call this a sad album. I feel a bit heartbroken listening to it myself. It makes me never want to go through another breakup again. I feel like I can barely handle it. Then again, I've handled it so many times in the past. Love is so complicated. Kacey's still in love, but seemingly can't be with the guy. That sucks so much.
"Who wants to be a lonely millionaire?" This song has just enough funk to it to really stand out. I don't know what I'm talking about.
I think if I wrote reviews for Pitchfork or something I would feel so much pressure. I don't feel like I know how to do this. I can write creative things about nothing or everything, but a review like this feels impossible.
