Shelter from the Storm: Innocence/Decadence

June 15, 2005, 11:45 PM

An update from a summer worth living. Ya know, it was only like two weeks ago that I was swinging by this Xanga almost daily to spit about how much life sucked, and yet here I am now, telling you that everything is okay. Maybe it's worth stepping back for a moment and acknowledging this. Could be that next time I run into trouble, emotionally or otherwise, I'll be able to remember this, the fact that everything is cyclical and that the sun often arrives after the rain. Could be that I'm just a teenager and it's tough to remember the good times when you're mired in the bad.

Anyways, it's been quite an interesting few days. I'm using "interesting" here as a sort of humility tactic, of course. Shit's been great.

Monday was chill during the day, but shit heated up during the "***** Party" that night. Hitched a ride to the Main Line to see Girlfriend. Great times. Met the character known as her younger brother John. We "watched" Reservoir Dogs, and you probably know what the quotation marks mean and I don't have to explain further. Maybe there will come a day later on when I regret the fact that classic movies are on the TV and I'm ignoring them for baser pursuits, but that time is not today, for I am sixteen years old, and life is all new to me now.

On Tuesday, plans were made to return to the formerly-fabled Firepit with pals Kristin, Cindy, and Mary. I wouldn't say plans were specific beyond "let's go to the Firepit." Maybe that was stupid of me. Vague notions of actually have a campfire were formed, and I did procure some lighter fluid and a lighter, but nothing materialized beyond that. Lots of bugs nipping at us, which caused a lot of complaining, and I don't know what I was more annoyed by. Still... generally speaking, it was kinda nice, being in those woods on a beautiful summer's night. I may not have found it Tuesday night, but I can predict that I will often find tranquility and peace and a sense of self in those woods as my adolescent years progress.

Girlfriend called Tuesday night, and we ended up talking on the phone for four hours and 39 minutes total, which even now I find a little bonkers. I just struggle to comprehend that there exists someone in my life right now who is interested in me enough to want to converse with me for that long. I appreciate it. As the kids are saying these days: "redunkulous." I hit the hay at four in the morning, a man content.

Things are great with Girlfriend, but I guess the one thing I struggle with logistically is the geographical distance between our houses, and the fact that I don't drive or own a car. My dad's putting up with that shit now and being a good sport but I don't know how many more times this summer I can convince him to schlepp me to the fucking Main Line. "Why couldn't my son have dated one of these nice Northeast Philadelphia hoodrats!" he no doubt rues as he shakes his fists toward the heavens.

In any case, I ended up back at Girlfriend's house earlier tonight, my feet hitting the pavement as my father peels the sedan down the street as fast as he can, and we hung out for a while with a crew, a few female friends of Girlfriend's and none other than Kevin B****. Some good ol' innocent hanging out, hide-and-seek and the like (and unlike the Reservoir Dogging the other night, "hide-and-seek" is not a euphemism of any sort). Girlfriend and I were literally just sitting on a bench at one point as our "hiding spot" and Kevin walks right past us, which felt surreal, like none of this is real.

And maybe it isn't. Tough to remember what's real when your Girlfriend heads to Ocean City, MD for two weeks. What the fuck am I going to do?

Here's what: tomorrow is my official start at the Lafayette Redeemer Retirement Home. So that's gonna be a trip. I also have four parties lined up in the next ten days. This summer, man... remember the good times.

JFingers88: Don't you hate it when girls go to Ocean Cities for the summer? You know, I've only been invited to 1 party this entire summer. My life is a bummer.

Anonymous: Joe's life is just one big party... no one can compete with him.

MadeFromRecycledPaper: Uhh, Joe, I think we need to hide from that dragon again.

Baby_C: dude im gonna start serving food to the elderly today too

My last post ended on a cliffhanger of sorts: four parties in ten days. While some of that was speculative, I have indeed been partying hard, and so let's check in with some of that. Would I describe the week as "non-stop"? Perhaps. But that's what summer's all about, baby.

But first: orientation week is going swimmingly at my new job. I am officially a waiter at a retirement home. While it seems like a good fit, I do somewhat regret sacrificing my freedom from 3:45 PM to 7:30 PM on this many summer nights. On the other hand, those hours could be a lot worse. And I'm working with a motley crew in the dining room, including NEast legend Joe G., and a dude who I'm pretty sure is actually Kip from Napoleon Dynamite. More updates on the Laf front to come, I'm sure.

After clocking out on my first night on the job, I went over to Ali and Meri's "luau." Actually, I'm not sure why I felt compelled to put that word in quotation marks—it really was a luau. Themed decorations and everything. Real nice ambiance. Complementing the ambiance was a bowl of "fruit punch," of which I chugged seven full cups for some reason (that "some reason" to be revealed in due time, I suppose). As such, I don't really "remember" all that much of the night, except for a general sense of mockery directed toward me, a rousing game of push-the-drunk-guy and the like, which wasn't all that great but probably evened out karmically by the fact that I found myself jumping on someone's car shortly thereafter. Not sure how I feel about this one just yet, let's let it sink in a little.

Regardless, today we did it all again. Clocked out, and hit a party. Our good pal Kev was hosting a party at his parents' house in Sheltenham. Charlie T. reappeared in the Northeast area after a delayed absence, and attended the party with me, and me and him and a few gals decided to check out a kegger at Burholme. Which is kinda fucked up, now that I think about it, that we'd ditch Kev's party (a known quantity) to check out a party in the woods (an unknown quantity), but no harm no foul I guess, since the kegger was fucking beat, the keg was kicked, we didn't know anyone, lesson learned etc. etc., and we returned to Kev's and had a pretty good time from there.

A checklist for the rest of the week and beyond. Tomorrow I have a quick family party in Oreland. Monday through Friday I have my first full week of work, every day, training. Friday is Anne's party. Saturday is Gigi's party, though that might get derailed if Girlfriend arrives home early from OCMD. Next Saturday is potentially my and Kristin's Badminton Tournament, more details TBD. I'm open to anyone tagging along for any of this, by the way. The more the merrier.

I'm suddenly realizing now that maybe nobody gives a shit about any of this, or worse, that maybe I'm actively doing harm by bragging about my summer or openly discussing party plans that feature illicit activities. Maybe it's just weird for me that things are going well, and I don't know how to respond to that, at least here on the Xanga. Tougher to write compellingly when there is very little conflict in my life. But then I also fear that I'll subconsciously cause conflict just to make things interesting. We'll see what happens.

Robert_L_Schmidt_III: Alright, boys and girls. If you're sick of all this mumbo-jumbo, like that stupid fucking pig cartoon, look no "futhur." COME TO THE XANGA OF ROBERT L SCHMIDT III, FEATURING: poetry, stories, nonsense, trash, and cool things to quote when hanging out on the corner drinking.
So, seriously, who the hell wants to read about what this pansy did all day, when you could be reading all about PARIS HILTON and SIMBA'S PRIDE (on DVD!) and drunken scientists and salty seas and maybe the occasional caramel apple and sometimes you might run into someone you know, or thought you knew.
P.S. See, I'm cool, I'm hip..... "furthur"..... get it? If you do, you'll fit right in with the crowd at Robert's Tavern, at http://www.xanga.com/robert_l_schmidt_iii
