Fore!, Jamie

Where to start with Huey Lewis and the News? The band brings to mind three distinct memories.

I'm maybe six and my dad is driving off-road with the top off of his big red truck somewhere under some power lines in the summer sun. "Doing It for My Baby" blasts through eighties Toyota speakers so only the bass line is clear.

I'm maybe sixteen and Borat is on screen pronouncing it "Hoo-ey Lewis." I suck and repeat this almost every time I hear the name to this day.

Uh... later the American Psycho guy talks about Huey and friends. And that is maybe the most telling bit of info I have about the band.

Removed from the context of what it was like to do a bunch of coke in the eighties and be Huey and/or my dad buying that truck, it's hard to know if any of this overly produced pop-rock is winking at itself or its influences.

Being used as a sociopath's favorite band (or whatever, I'm NOT looking up the plot again for you goons) in American Psycho gives me the context I need.

One song is literally tooty fruity.

"Naturally" and "Simple as That" are good.

I've seen Hoo-ey live, and the dude and band absolutely rock and boogie down.

Drew owes me money for this!
