Yearlong Song Challenge, Day 52: Zach

Prompt: "A song performed by someone who isn't necessarily known as a musician first"

Selected by Zach

"Ritmo de Otoño"
Bernie Williams ft. Dave Koz
Moving Forward, 2009

Something about the sports teams that were good (and that weren't my teams) from 2000 to 2004 instill the fear of God in me. Watching Bernie Williams come up to the plate was scary. So was watching everyone else hit. Jorge Posada, Chad Curtis, Paul O'Neill, Scott Brosius—those Yankee teams were so good. It's hard for me to believe they are real people with real lives. It's the Jeter-era Yankees and the early 2000s Duke men's basketball team that make me feel this more than any other team.

The fact that Bernie plays guitar in such a sensitive way doesn't feel possible. He was a killer on a team of straight up cold-blooded killers. But he has a life outside of hurting my young emotions. I would listen to this song more than a few times without knowing it was written by a former baseball player that I watched. I would also go down a rabbit hole again of painfully watching Bernie Williams hit playoff home runs, especially the one to win Game 1 of the ALCS against the Orioles in the Jeffrey Maier game.
