"Meowrly"
Meow the Jewels, 2015
In 2014, Run the Jewels put out their sophomore self titled album Run the Jewels 2. 2014 is a really interesting time on the internet. If you've ever been so blessed to see the "millennial cringe" memes going around online, this is the PEAK time for it. The "I did a thing," not before my coffee, cat-loving, Tumblr era on the internet. So much so, that there was a Kickstarter in 2014 for Killer Mike and El-P, the members of RtJ, to reproduce RtJ2 with only cat sounds. They actually raised $55,000, and the rap duo did it. This is the origin story to how we got "Meowrly," the cat-ized version of "Early." Which is really interesting, because the song is about the strained relationship of police and black communities. Then we have a bunch of internet weirdos begging for it to be done with cat sounds. Even though it was endorsed by El-P, I assume he thought it would never happen. This is why millennial cringe exists, my good people. Maybe Pat will cover it on Epimemeology.
