Album of the Week: Deeper Well

Here's another brand-spanking-new album for your listening pleasure, as presented by Record Club. Is it a good album? I have no idea! It just came out! I'm actually writing this introductory paragraph two days before the album drops, so I couldn't have listened to it if I wanted to! Actually, that's a good question... what does it take to get on those critics mailing lists? Like when a record company sends you an advance copy of an album so that you can have your review ready for the day of its release. I wonder how we could get Record Club on such a list. Would've been cool to drop six Kacey Musgraves reviews two days ago, a mere hours after it became available to the public. Alas, we are relegated to the huddled masses, forced to listen to an album after it becomes widely available. Sorry about my lack of pull in the music industry.

PICKED BY A POLL

JOE'S COMMENTS: We're back to the same poll we used for last week's. It was a quick and dirty poll, and I didn't advertise it all that much like I would for the annual holiday poll, so I wasn't expecting many votes. Eight people voted.

The following albums received two votes each: Bleachers by Bleachers; Blueberry Boat by the Fiery Furnaces; Donny Most by Donny Most; Playing Favorites by Sheer Mag; The Past Is Still Alive by Hurray for the Riff Raff; Sons of the Beaches by Flash Cadillac and the Continental Kids. The Rusted Root thing got three votes. Kacey Musgraves got four votes, making her the clear winner here.

Next week we're starting the Record Club Team Battle Royale, which means we'll hopefully have thirteen reviews AT LEAST, each week for four weeks. So let's sit back and relax and listen to some new Kacey before this shit pops off.

ARTIST DETAILS

PRONOUNS: she/her/hers

ABOUT: Kacey Lee Musgraves was born August 21, 1988, in Golden, Texas. She started writing songs at age eight (when she wrote a song for her elementary school's graduation ceremony). She learned guitar at age twelve. After graduation, she moved to Austin, and came in seventh on a season of Nashville Star. 2013 saw her major-label debut, and Rolling Stone declared a song from that album, "Follow Your Arrow," the 39th best country song of all time. The last decade has seen Kacey Musgraves rise beyond country stardom into pop stardom. Her third major-label album, Golden Hour, won Album of the Year at the Grammys. She is described as a modern country musician who embraces progressive values.

DISCOGRAPHY: Deeper Well is Kacey's sixth LP, though that includes a 2016 Christmas album (A Very Kacey Christmas) and doesn't include four LPs released independently in the '00s (Wikipedia calls them "demo albums" now). Her debut album is 2013's Same Trailer Different Park. The most recent album before this newest one was 2021's star-crossed.

PREVIOUSLY ON RECORD CLUB: Feels like one of those artists to whom I could connect every single RC alumnus to if I wanted to. I don't want to, because that's a lot of work, but here is an incomplete list of everything I could find.

When she was younger, as a side gig, Kacey performed as Hannah Montana at children's birthday parties.

In the summer of 2018, Kacey Musgraves opened for Harry Styles on his tour. In the summer of 2022, MUNA opened for Kacey Musgraves on her tour.

Ian Fitchuk co-wrote thirteen songs on this album. He also co-wrote MUNA's "Silk Chiffon," which featured Phoebe Bridgers. He has also co-written songs for Maggie Rogers, Harry Styles, Maren Morris, and Guster. Daniel Tashian co-wrote those thirteen Deeper Well songs with Kacey and Ian, and he's also written for Lizard Person Demi Lovato before.

Lizard Person Demi Lovato and Kacey Musgraves have both hosted their Christmas specials in recent years. Unfortunately, The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show features at least three of my least favorite people on earth. It also features Lana Del Rey (whom I neither like nor dislike), who has popped up on RC albums by Cat Power and Taylor Swift.

Lizard Person Demi Lovato sang a Frozen cover during the end credits of Frozen. For Frozen II, the end-credit covers were sung by Weezer and Kacey Musgraves. So we can add Kacey to the ongoing Frozen list. We can also add her to the on-going Sesame Street list, since she's made at least two appearances on that show.

We can also add her to the ongoing list of RC alumni who were nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys (she lost to Macklemore). We can also add her to the ongoing list of RC alumni who have won Album of the Year at the Grammys (though it remains to be seen if she'll join Fleetwood Mac and Alanis Morissette and Taylor Swift as RC alumni who have won the award with the actual RC-covered album).

A couple loosies: Margaret Glapsy covered Kacey Musgraves; Kacey Musgraves recently featured on an updated version of Noah Kahan's "She Calls Me Back"; "Deeper Well" has linguistic connections to Deep Space and Wells Fargo.

Kacey Musgraves never misses an opportunity to participate in a live tribute or recorded tribute or concert fundraiser, which means there are a lot of connections to RC alumni who have also participated in those albums or events. Examples:

On November 2023, she participated in Christmas at Graceland, a televised Elvis tribute, with Alanis Morissette and Post Malone (and Lana Del Rey, who isn't technically an alumna).

In 2018, she participated in the Revamp and Restoration albums, which was a double album that "reimagined the songs of Elton John & Bernie Taupin" (Elton was on that Gorillaz album, you'll recall). Kacey was on the country side with Dolly Parton and Maren Morris. On the pop/rock side was Florence + the Machine, Lizard Person Demi Lovato, the Killers, and Sam Smith. Miley Cyrus was on both discs.

On June 11, 2020, she participated in Picture Show: A Tribute Celebrating John Prine (who was on that Kurt Vile EP, you'll recall), with Kurt Vile, Sturgill Simpson, Jim James, Margo Price, and multiple Highwomen.

On April 18, 2020, she participated in the COVID-era televised concert One World: Together at Home, which featured a ton of artists and musicians performing from home, including Billy Joe Armstrong, Burna Boy, Hozier, Lizzo (upset that her favorite strip club had been shuttered due to COVID lockdowns), Maren Morris, Sam Smith, Taylor Swift, and the Killers.

On March 21, 2021, Matthew McConaughey hosted We're Texas: Giddy Up to Give Back, a televised concert to help Texans affected by extreme winter storms. Kacey participated, as did Kelly Clarkson and Post Malone, the latter doing a cover of a Sturgill Simpson song.

Also, if you'll please recall, RC alumna Reba McEntire played the character Reba Hart on the hit TV show Reba, and, according to official Reba canon, Reba Hart died in those same 2021 Texas winter storms. Just thought I'd save the important connection for last.

RC CLASSIC ALBUM OF THE WEEK

Every week from now on, we're giving a quick re-listen to the RC album we covered five years ago exactly. Check out the quick reevaluation every Friday morning, before the regular reviews. Reevaluation, reflection, something like that. We'll see.

WEEK 7: March 17-23, 2019
