Yearlong Song Challenge, Day 161: Nate

Prompt: "A song with a formal title in its, um, title"

Selected by Nate

"God of Everything Else"
Porridge Radio
Clouds in the Sky They Will Always Be There for Me, 2024

"God" is a title, no further questions at this time.

Dana Margolin has one of the most evocative voices going in indie rock music. Her pen is sharp as hell, too, but it's how she sings what she writes that makes every Porridge Radio album a must-listen affair. Back in early years of Trump I, when woman-focused indie rock was having its moment, there were texturally similarities to the emotional palate that made the movement less a technicolor affair and more a series of blues. What was missing, as it turns out, was Porridge Radio. That first Snail Mail EP was pretty good, though, back when they basically sounded like several different interpretations of "Linger" by the Cranberries. Stranger in the Alps by Phoebe Bridgers also holds up outside the era.

Looking ahead to what some of the other prompts will require later in the month, here are some songs:
  • "Wretched Trajectory" by Origami Angel
  • "You Will Come Home" by Porridge Radio
  • "Play" by Justin Timberlake
  • "Bangin' on the Ceiling" by Comfy
  • "Fill the Gap" by High Vis
  • "Forever" by Hovvdy
  • "You Trigger Me" by Tamar Berk
Not many prompts left, not many chances to get Frank Reynolds with it.

The list of songs feels like cheating to me, but I did not have the foresight to set rules against it.

Just listened to Stranger in the Alps the other day for the first time in a long while. You're damn right it holds up.
