The Stone Roses, Nate

Sometimes you think you've never heard a band before only to put on their seminal debut album and realize, aw shit, you've actually heard a million things by this band. So we've got a sort of anything-to-anyone rock album happening here, the kind of narcissian reflecting pool in which you can see whatever your heart most desires projected back at you. Do you want to hear the Beatles? Do you want to hear Blur? Do you want to hear Beach House? The Cure? Joy Division? My Bloody Valentine? It's all here, all ably and honestly produced. You can understand how people drove themselves insane listening to this thing, how the band itself seemed to drive themselves insane trying to follow it up and live up to a legacy. It's revisionist to say that it's a record with wax wings, but even then, how likely was it to really be able to deliver on the promise of being everything to everyone? Only Everclear can do that. Good record, anyway.
