This is a really cool album. It weaves psychedelic pop sounds with a really fun '80s sound in a way that feels effortless. I like it when they lean into the psychedelic sound a little more, but that's more of a personal preference. It's a cohesive album while still playing around with different styles; even the Scarborough fair thing on "Elizabeth My Dear" feels like it belongs.
I like it when people who are not RC regulars showcase their favorite band or album. Lex's pick of Black Sabbath's self-titled was one of my top five records from last year, and this might be in the running for this year; the thing that's holding me back from saying that it would be with a little more confidence (aside from the fact that we have seven more months of records) is that it's very easy to understand and approach. There isn't really anything new or challenging here. When music feels like that, it sometimes gets boring from repetition. But, you know, it was also made in 1989, so maybe it doesn't need to feel new in 2026.
