Yearlong Song Challenge, Day 127: Brianna

Prompt: "The song you sang along to during a pivotal moment in your life"

Selected by Brianna

"Things Happen"
Dawes
All Your Favorite Bands, 2015

2016 was a pivotal year in what I would imagine to be a lot of peoples' lives. A lot of things changed in the ways we all viewed each other and how we operated as a country and society. It also happened to be the year I got my first full time job as a teacher, at a school I'd go on to work at for another year school years.

If you know anyone who teaches or if you can recall your time as a student, you can probably understand that the first year for a teacher is the hardest. You're still trying to figure your teaching style out, your classroom management, the coworker you're going to be to your colleagues. Throw in the creation of your curriculum from scratch, and "hard" doesn't even begin to cover it. For me, specifically, I was hired to teach not just History (per my degree) but also English, Health, and Career Development. Needless to say, my head was spinning on a daily basis.

One thing I did actually appreciate about that school (besides the teachers, they were truly the best colleagues I ever had) was that I had a decently long commute. Most people would say the opposite, but I enjoy a long car ride in the morning before and after work to listen to some of my favorite music and either get my head on straight or decompress. During that commute, this song by Dawes was on repeat, not only because it's a great song but because it was also a great reminder.

Shit happens. You can either wallow in it or acknowledge it and move on. Because the thing is, tomorrow's going to come. And if it's like 2016, it'll probably bring on its own shit that happens. Just keep on keeping on, because what else can you do?
