Exit Survey: Joe on Bo-Day-Shus!!!

1. Were you happy with the reviews that were published? How do you feel about your week as Record Club captain?

The question says how do I feel about the week, and so this will function more as an exit survey of Puke on Your Birthday Super Mario Bros. 1993 Movie Week than an exit survey of our week spent specifically with Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper.

I'm happy. It was a goofy bit meant to be goofy and unserious. As such, we had Joe and Nate and Sunny leaning into the bit, and everyone else kinda keeping it at arm's length until Thursday, when a stupid prompt forced their hands, and even then it was like "nah, I'm not doing this." Which is fine! That's what makes the joke funny! That it's stupid and only the truly committed to blogging are going to take that shit at face value and just do it. 

2. How was the variety of opinions? A wide range, kinda samey, or somewhere in the middle?

I don't know, it's tough to say with only three reviews. You had the slight positive, the slightly negative, and the bonkers creative writing assignment. I wouldn't say any of the three reviews were "samey" in any particular way. 

You know where the true wide range can be found? In the quality comparison between the CLASSIC 1993 film Super Mario Bros. and that shitty Minions-style cheap fucking kids' fodder known as the stinky, putrid 2023 film The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

3. Were there any differing opinions that made you view the album in a different light?

Sunny's song made me laugh more than your average Mojo Nixon song.

4. Was there anything about this album or this artist that you wished that people would've written about more?

No, but I'll point out here that no one, not even yours truly, fell into the trap of trying to make Mojo Nixon's music sad or poignant simply based on the fact that he died this past February. This is definitely not that type of album. Mojo Nixon seems like the type of guy who would make Skid Roper interrupt his wedding with an even more sincere version of "Lincoln Logs."

5. How do you feel about your album choice now that the week is over? A success? Any regrets?

If we're doing albums adjacent to the CLASSIC 1993 film Super Mario Bros., then there weren't too many other options. Maybe another Mojo Nixon album? But then we would've missed out on "Elvis Is Everywhere," which was obliquely connected to the film. Otherwise, Richard Edson was a drummer for Sonic Youth but didn't appear on any of their albums. No one else in the cast really has any albums to their name, at least none that would be considered eligible for RC (e.g. Dan Castellaneta has comedy albums; e.g. John Leguizamo is on a best selling film soundtrack, and plus the #1 hit song from that album is about his character, and doesn't actually feature his voice).

6. Any other takeaways from the reviews? Or from this experience in general?

You should watch the CLASSIC 1993 film Super Mario Bros. if you haven't already. Anyone who told themselves that they "didn't have time" to watch it this week are lying.

7. What is an improvement that Record Club can make that would enhance everyone's experience, either as a captain or as a listener/writer?

Should have more than three album reviews on average over the next twelve weeks. Hopefully!
