Prompt: "A song involving the smoking of one or more cigarettes"
Selected by Sunny
Simon & Garfunkel
Bookends, 1968
Easy trump card to play in your coming of age, Garden State-esque screenplay. Probably around 2/3rds of the way through the film. One of those songs your friend's iPod happens to play while you're on the Turnpike yourself and think oh, hey, huh.
What's more American than chain smoking cigarettes? Hardly anything. Just consider how important tobacco was economically. Newports for me please. Here's a tangent: I had a Marketing professor once who bragged about how he worked on anti-smoking ads in the '90s to really tamp down on cigarettes. When I congratulated him on getting rid of smoking in America, he said America will always be a smoking nation. I was confused by his whiplash tone. Years later, walking down the sidewalk seeing vape pods and boxes littered around like leaves, I had sudden insight.
What's more American than having an existential crisis about the meaning of the American dream? Hardly anything. A nice cigarette may help calm your nerves.
