Prompt: "The last song that the artist ever made before they died"
Selected by Sunny
"Lazarus"
David Bowie
Blackstar, 2016
Boy, sad prompt, sad stuff. I'm not completely sure "Lazarus" is technically the last song Bowie ever made, but it certainly feels that way, with the lyrics, mood, music video. Sparse song, heavy song, good song.
The video released a few days before Bowie died, which, on top of the themes, make it seem all very intentional. It's easy to read that the song is a swan song and a deliberate meditation on death from the artist, and when better else? It speaks to that hypothetical thought experiment: if you could know exactly when you were going to die, would you prefer to know? Or a Buddhist death meditation: If you really did know when, for sure, what would you make of that last bit of time?
