Some of the best songs written are songs that don't just have layers to them, but layers that emerge over time. This is the reason why My Morning Jacket, masters of the complex song pattern, are my favorite band, and why this specific Arctic Monkeys song is so damn good.
It starts so simple, an alternating keyboard note backing the opening lyrics. Then, add in the guitar and some tip-tapping of the drum and now we have some forward movement! This song is going somewhere. Next, a new drum beat gets added to the mix, and although we are hearing the same lyrics and other instrumentals again, there's a new life to them.
A pause, an almost reversion back to simple beginnings. Then...
BAM! The climax of the whole thing hits us in the face; it's nothing completely insane or shocking, but the contrast to where we just were to this final round of the lyrics is powerful. It's obvious now that this is where we are heading the entire time.
Put all of these layers together from the beginning, and you'd still probably get a pretty decent song. Let them simmer and then come through at all the right times, though, and get a masterpiece.
