Album of the Week: Victory Laps

There's a friend of the blog (who shall remain nameless here) who used to put "Wake me up when September ends" as his Facebook status every September 1st. Then, on October 1st, he'd write "I'm awake......." or something like that. People used to HATE the bit, and it got to the point where the reaction became part of the joke. He'd be posting this status every 9/1 and 10/1 because he knew it'd result in a few dozen people saying that he was the fucking worst and fucking this status and fuck you and so on and so on. And regardless, every year, on the first of those months, he'd be out there posting the Green Day song. Honestly, this bit is one of the few things I miss about Facebook. I think about it every October 1st. I'm awake........

WALTER'S COMMENTS: "It's rare that I stumble across a band whose entire discography I enjoy, but Wax Fang has a portfolio I've been listening to in volumes. I find each of their albums has its own signature, well described in the band's website bio; this album is characterized as 'guitar driven rock meets synth pop.' I recommend listening to the album all the way through, as there are some good transitions between tracks (sometimes unnoticeable)."

ARTIST DETAILS

PRONOUNS: he/him/his for all members

ABOUT: Wax Fang is either a band or an artist, depending on who you ask. If it's an artist, then "Wax Fang" is the name of the musical project created by Scott Carney with help from backing musicians. Wax Fang's first release was a true solo album, but they have since gained and lost members. So if it's a band, then Wax Fang consists of Scott Carney (lead vocals, guitar), Corey McAfee (bass, also their manager), Zach Driscoll (keyboards), and Dave Chale (drums). Wax Fang originated in Louisville, KY, in the mid-aughts (maybe 2004 or 2005ish). Their aforementioned website bio states that they are currently working on their fifth LP, so all the verbs on their Wikipedia page are in the present tense, i.e. Wax Fang is not broken up.

DISCOGRAPHY: Victory Laps, released in 2017, is the band's most recent album. Their first, Black and Endless Night, was released in 2005, but rereleased under the Wax Fang moniker in 2006. Their most famous album—just based on the fact that it's the only one with its own separate Wikipedia page—is 2007's La La Land. The most recent release altogether was 2019's Repetition EP, which compiles some unreleased tracks and B-sides.

ADDITIONAL INFO

READING SOME SHIT: A 2018 feature in Louisville Magazine.

WATCHING SOME SHIT: A performance of "Decathect" at the Victory Laps release show in Louisville, 2017

PREVIOUSLY ON RECORD CLUB: Fangs, i.e. teeth, have shown up on a few albums in our past. Green Day were "Pulling Teeth," Malign Hex sang about "Jim's Teeth," and La Luz had "Loose Teeth."

Wax Fang has toured with My Morning Jacket. Maybe someone will eventually pick an MMJ album for RC so I can stop clarifying with "and Jim James is the frontman of My Morning Jacket" in this section.

Apparently Wax Fang had three different songs featured on an episode of American Dad!, which in some circles is their claim to fame. I went through a list of all the music featured on the whole series, and found some Record Club alumni, including Ace of Base (with RC song "The Sign"), Carly Rae Jepsen, Diana Ross (with RC song "I'm Coming Out"), Dolly Parton, Genesis, Grateful Dead, Green Day, Hall & Oates, Kelly Clarkson, Miley Cyrus, T-Pain, Tame Impala, and Thin Lizzy (with RC song "The Boys Are Back in Town").

Happy listening, RC family!
Have a great week!
