My brain is having a hard time processing this album. The name Frank Turner had me convinced this album is from 1959 or something. It just sounds like an old guy's name. I also can't tell, is he some version of British (how he says "staaahting" instead of "starting," is it British or Bostonian?). He's dressed in a suit on the album cover. He seems like he should have a stick up his ass. But then, his music has kind of a lot of energy? I didn't count on this. He half-sings, half-screams into my ear. I'm sure he can run a hell of a hoedown, aggressively strumming down hard on the guitar strings.
I don't feel lots of variation with this album. It all feels like one version of the same song. To be clear, that's not necessarily a negative thing. It's just a fact. I do appreciate his reflections on "Substitute" about a guitar standing in for a woman in his bed.
