As someone who has Been To Therapy™, I have to say that mental health is no laughing matter. That said, comedy is a circle, and this song leans so hard into seriousness that, at some point, it loops around to being... kind of funny? Not funny, "ha ha." Funny, "Jesus Christ, man." It's just suuuuch a bummer. Am I a bad person if I'm not moved by this song? Maybe I'm tired of hearing old white men complain about how bad their life is. RIP Johnny, you would have loved Trump*.
Did you know the original Nine Inch Nails version lost the 1996 Grammy for Best Rock Song to Alanis Morrisette's "You Oughta Know"? Fitting. I'll take female rage over male whining any day.
*I don't know if that's actually true. I know very little about Johnny Cash, and his Wikipedia page is shockingly sparse. I haven't seen Walk the Line, but I have seen Walk Hard. It felt like a funny thing to say, so I said it. Sound off in the comments.

Walk Hard is much better than Walk the Line
It's been documented a few times on this blog that I hate Johnny Cash's music, so I'd love nothing better than to throw this dude under the bus and say he would've been a MAGAt. But I dunno. He did get really into Christianity and perform at events for an evangelist, which shows a willingness to get behind a strongman, but that evangelist was Billy Graham, who was an advocate for civil rights, so maybe that was a consideration, and would have made it impossible for him to support a racist like trump. Generally, I don't see evidence that he would be a trumper.
This song sucks shit, though, just like all his other songs.
