Summer Song Challenge, Day 87: Dave

Prompt: "A song about masturbation"

Selected by Dave

"Phoebe Cates"
Fenix*TX
Lechuza, 2001

I began this challenge with "Flight 601 (All I've Got Is Time)" by Fenix*TX, which prompted a "Something Old" post by Joe in which he points out that, while catchy, the band's humor is trivial and childish. I've also referenced multiple times this summer that pop-punk is fun and stupid, so if you're in search of introspection through any of the these bands, then you're misguided in your search. This song is about masturbating to Phoebe Cates. They specifically reference the infamous pool scene from Fast Times at Ridgemont High, which is one of the most relatable lyrics ever written.

Mentioning Fast Times at Ridgemont High on the blog? That's a paddlin'.

And why is that?

I really hate that movie, and I feel like it became a running joke in the movie interviews I used to do back in the day, that people kept bringing it up and I had to explain my hatred multiple times. Here's a quote from this interview:

Pam: Number two is—you hate this movie—Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Joe: Ugh.

Pam: Which, I think it's funny that you hate, because there are similarities to Dazed and Confused.

Joe: Yeah, they're in high school, it's a large cast, there's a bunch of different stories told. But, ideologically, they are completely opposed. Dazed and Confused is all about—and I don't want to get into it too much right at the beginning—but everyone shows a basic love and understanding for each other. Whereas, in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, they are, at their core, shitty human beings. I think Dazed and Confused makes an argument that people are good, and Fast Times makes an argument that people are ultimately flawed.

I also forget sometimes that not everyone is aware of every single inside joke on this stupid blog, so that's my bad!

All good man. Not a huge fan of the movie myself. The pool scene is pretty good though.
