"Reason you chose this album" is a prompt that has existed since the very beginning of Record Club. I think it's an important question to consider. Record Club would be boring if every single album was chosen because, e.g., "critics loved it." Nah, that's probably the worst reason to choose an album for this club. We're music critics too, and so what do you expect us to start if "critics love it" has already been established? That's boring.
I more so like the idea that Record Club albums will find you when you least expect it. I guess I've been thinking about this in the context of Go Go Diva since the "reason" this album was chosen by Rachel C. was because she discovered the band through a song on The New Pope. It's not the zeitgeisty-TV-show-to-album pipeline that I'm appreciative of, but more so the general idea that we can find music anywhere, if we are open to it. Maybe you are watching some bizarre-on-purpose Jude Law thing and a sound catches your ear, and you do some exploring to find out what and why, and you eventually figure it out and listen.
Record Club supposes an extra step. What if you were doing research and listened to figure out whether you're down the right path, AND you wanted some friends along for the journey? That's where the offering to RC comes in. Here's something I found, and now I'm giving it to you, and we can all figure this thing out together.
That alone makes this whole thing worth it. I don't even give a shit about whether the album actually ends up being good. I would have never known about this great album if it wasn't for this sequence of events, one that depends heavily on the offering and sharing of music potential. Even if the album is terrible, we still shared something. I think that's so cool. That's why we've been doing Record Club for six and a half years now, and why I don't ever want to stop. The journey feels too fulfilling.
And that's not even mentioning that Go Go Diva is actually a really good album. Somehow, the Italian lyrics make its Florence-core inspiration pop rock more accessible than anything along these lines found in the States. I'm able to let go of my misgivings and fully dive into something brand new. That's the magic of Record Club, baby.
