I know there are no rules (except the rules that must be enforced), but is it cheating to pick a song you recommended to your husband to write about for last year's Summer Song Challenge? It was my song to begin with. It's a great song; I was going to pick it inevitably. After all, why not? Why shouldn't I pick it?
I bought this album for my dad for Christmas 2016. My dad is generally considered "easy" to shop for, but I had grown bored after so many years of NY Giants apparel and Three Stooges merch. I thought I was so clever. A new Monkees album. We used to watch The Monkees together on Nick at Nite growing up, remember Dad? We even saw Micky Dolenz on that cruise back in the early 2000s. That was cool. Here's the really cool part—Ben Gibbard wrote the best track on the album. My favorite singer wrote the best song, isn't that neat? I think you'll love it. So here you go, Dad, a little of you and a little of me. Merry Christmas.
The response was underwhelming, so much so I don't even remember it. I don't try so hard anymore and feel guilty about that. But then again, neither does he.
