Oh, to be able to rock out with my cock out like Thin Lizzy can. Take the big dick energy of Mötley Crüe, the vocals (if hopefully not the politics) of Van Morrison, and the slamming guitar of Black Sabbath, and you get one of Ireland's most rocking exports.
The band maintains the propulsive energy that a title like Jailbreak evokes. Ain't no ballads here. These dudes are fucking their way across the globe and won't be making excuses. While the hits here ("The Boys Are Back in Town," "Romeo and the Lonely Girl," "Cowboy Song") crush it, the band never downshifts. That's fun if you're on cocaine, but I'd like a bit more diversity in an album.
That energy works perfectly, though, as Titus Andronicus' opening number to their recent tour, the band's first since COVID. This Chicago version of "The Boys Are Back in Town" with ample crowd participation captures the momentum that Joe, Nate, and I witnessed at Underground Arts in Philly this fall. The source material and what it inspired holds up just fine 50 years later, if you're looking to grab some beers at Dino's Bar and Grill.
