Somewhere in our RC history, we've had a band (or multiple) who have coded as "Emo" because the lead singer has "Emo voice," a distinct timbre that works with the genre's themes, sonically and lyrically. Think the MCR guy's voice. Ought here made me realize there's also a "punk/indie rock voice" (or maybe three), and I see why they made an album.
"Beautiful Blue Sky" is a great song, one of those songs that gets better with each relisten revealing various depths in musical composition and lyrical fun. It can bring a tear to your eye.
It plays on that surprising razor's edge between happy and sad to great effect, and shows just what punk voice can do. Surprisingly, the first time through the album I didn’t like it as much, it had to grow on me a bit, I mean it is eight minutes long. That speaks to the strength of the rest of the album, which, while isn't as great as "BBS" in total, has enough earworms. Like "Men for Miles" is catchy even if I don’t understand at all. There's some filler among the album's forty minutes—pleasant enough, just forgettable. Sun's coming down, head inside, listen to music.
