Young Enough, Kai

Wow did I hit play on a CHVRCHES album I thought as Young Enough began. I'm just joking, as I took time to read the "why I picked it" section of the album introduction this week. I will say, though, I played CHVRCHES after listening to Charly Bliss, and they don't sound worlds apart...

The album name seems to capture the main theme I got from the album—being young and growing up. I sometimes get frustrated with this theme, as I generally find those passionately singing they are still young enough to make mistakes are in their early twenties (or younger), and I feel grumpy and old as I exclaim that yes, you definitely are “Young Enough.”

I was suspicious this was the case on "Young Enough," when I heard "I don't know what's coming for me after twenty four." To decide whether I should feel grumpy and old when listening to the album, I actually tried to find out the age of the members of the band. I only succeeded in finding Spencer Fox's age, lead guitarist and co-founder, who is 29. As such, I guess that is close enough to my age that I don't have to feel grumpy. Interestingly, on my search, I also learned that Spencer Fox is the voice of Dash from The Incredibles movie. Go figure.

I have never been great at understanding music genres. There seems to be as many genres as there are artists at times. Charly Bliss seems to straddle Pop and Rock to my ears, and blends those on the album. I haven't listened to much Pop, or Power pop, in a while, and I really enjoyed the change of pace for this week.

Specifically in terms of reviewing the album, I thought it started really strong, and in particular I really liked "Blown to Bits" despite pulling out the "twenty four" lyric above from said song. After the opening few songs though I kind of lost the thread of enjoyment, and the mid-to-late point of the album didn't leave much of an impression on me. Overall though, an enjoyable listen.
