The true crime here is the almost-classic bow-wower ballad "Marijuana." With a guitar solo tragically cut short like the countless lives ruined by the Devil's lettuce, it's the kind of material that needs room to breathe. Unfortunately, McGruff (a hard-nosed detective who abhors frills and leafy greens of all varieties) never lets his studio band off the leash.
Later, on "I'm Glad I'm Me" (a funky Men/Dogs At Work knockoff), McGruff's English-language interpreter might actually have found the pocket with a little help from his friends, i.e. some herbal remedies. However, the uncredited voice actor strays so far from the beat, the listener cannot help but hear the input lag between McGruff's silent barks and the proprietary translation (generously provided by the National Crime Prevention Council).
Giving McGruff all due credit for his contribution to the United States' victory in the War on Drugs (especially in the inner cities, where it was needed most), music fans should curb their expectations...
