Where Were You When It Happened?, Nate

Much joy has been extracted in critical circles at the expense of Greta Van Fleet, a band of young men with nice hair who, like countless young men with nice hair before them, discovered the rock music of the '70s and decided they, too, would like to do the Misty Mountain Hop. The joke isn't the rip, but how artless and straightforward the rip is. Really, the joke is on us, the rock-enjoying public, as our critical class howls against the very real notion of reanimation as only viable path to mainstream penetration.

Is it perhaps loaded to think of Greta Van Fleet while listening to Monotonix? Assuredly. Do the same questions of replication vs reinterpretation come up listening to Where Were You When it Happened?? Decide for yourself, and while you're at it, decide whether or not garage rock is the kind of thing that can be expanded upon in meaningful ways. There are certain sounds that will connect regardless of who makes them. That does not delude their power, though it might delude the messenger.
