How does the internet feel about this beer? I decided that today would be a good day to finally explore the subreddits that deal with the hobby of craft beer. Would they have anything to say about this beer that I enjoyed so much?
As is sometimes the case, reddit seems to be on a whole different planet that I am when it comes to something that I enjoy. If you go to r/CraftBeer, 90% of the posts are hazy New England IPAs, which I've already expressed in excruciating detail the ways in which I dislike this beer style. Most of the posts are pictures of the beer that the author of the post just drank, and most of them look like orange juice. Here's a recent example. This type of post is so prevalent that the top post of all time pokes humor at their expense (at least these beer nerds are self-aware).
Also, what's up with those beer glasses? The ones with the really thin stem and the oversized cup? I see those everywhere. I guess they are the trendy beer glass these days. Or maybe this was a receptacle specifically designed for hazy IPAs, in which case, I don't really need one...
I follow r/CraftBeer now, and there aren't enough posts that its become annoying or anything. But I don't really see what I could possible gain from being part of this subreddit. A stranger I will never meet just drank a beer I will never even have a chance to drink. Wow.
I did search for today's beer, though, and surprisingly, someone posted about Flying Fish Abbey Dubbel less than two weeks ago. There was one upvote, and zero comments. I wonder if the person who posted this felt slighted that apparently no one cared that he drank a Flying Fish Abbey Dubbel. Hopefully not. Hopefully that person knows that you can't expect other people to care about what beer you just drank. That's just not how this works. You can enjoy the beer, you can shout into the void, occasionally it will shout back, but more often than not, there's silence, just you and a tummy full of the beer you just enjoyed. That should be enough. In my personal experience, it is.
Or, you can try to go a little more local. There is a r/PhillyCraftBeer subreddit as well. There is even less foot traffic on this subreddit, but at least the few posts it gets a week are a little more relevant for those craft beer drinkers who live in this city. Now, instead of someone posting a hazy IPA that I will never drink, people are posting a hazy IPA that I could totally drink if I wanted to because it's sold at the six-pack store down the street, but probably won't because it's a hazy IPA.
To be honest, I would probably lean on this subreddit a little more often if I was going out more often. If I needed info on a local brewery or beer bar, this would be a decent source of knowledge. But as it stands now, I'm still just grabbing random shit off the shelves in the supermarket, so I don't really need anything from this subreddit.
There was one time about a month ago when someone said they were driving down from Michigan, and were willing to trade with someone, MI local brews for PA local brews. I thought for a hot second about it, but then decided maybe I shouldn't meet strangers from the internet during a pandemic.
So I guess this one is worth a follow as well, despite the fact that I don't really need it, and I don't really care to see whatever stupid fucking Evil Genius beer is being released this week. It can't hurt, is my point.
Do I have an overall point for this blog post? Probably not. I just want you to know that there are reddit resources for people who care about this kind of thing. And I guess I ostensibly care? Kind of?
