Bastard Jargon, Sam

Nakhane's dancy grooves and clever lyrics evoke Prince to me. And that should be high praise. The late Siren of St. Paul (patent pending) is arguably one of the most successful and influential pop musicians of all time (or at least of the '80s).

Unfortunately, Bastard Jargon doesn't evoke the transcendent or memorable Prince albums. This is more like one of the millions of records Prince put out from 1994 through his death that no one has ever heard of.

I find this record neither fun nor serious enough to hold my attention. Instead, I'm left with a series of fine but forgettable jams. "Do You Well" is the closest that almost gets there, but there's still a flatness I can't get over.
