Sunny Daze for President, Sunny

No sir, you your money's no good here, in Hell. Better to rule here than serve, most definitely, but you won't get to the top with money. It'll take deeds.

Look at that, an instrumental open. What a week! Sunny Daze drops you right into their groovy base that keeps the grounding for the whole album. Just over two minutes of that until you hear a lyric, and several times again later on where Daze is just grooving along. It's a very retro sound; not exactly sure which decade, but with more modern pacing and voice distortion.

I want my presidents just grooving, I guess. I don't really care for slippery Willy, but when he's most charming is when he's ripping that sax. I don't really know what the Weathermen are doing in a lot of these songs, thematically. Except "Money in Hell," which is very on the nose.

The Weather Underground were a '70s (I think?) group that was mostly middle-class college types trying to instigate some sort of class revolution through small dollar black box tactics. Blowing up the bathroom in government buildings and stuff. Freak power! There's something very satisfying-sounding about that sort of activism, doing something, but ultimately the Weathermen didn't really accomplish anything. If I want anything from the president, it's to deliver the people a good time. I can't remember in my life when that was on offer. But at lease Sunny Daze is trying here; I'll take a little easy catharsis across 30 minutes of grooving.
