Supa Dupa Fly, Sunny
Here's an album that takes you back. Hip hop today sounds so different, but it also sounded different-different before this. Like a shift from Felonies of east coast/west coast hip hop to Misdimeanors. Missy's writing and singing, Timbaland's production (which hits me right in my high-school-heart) puts together something that still sounds unique. Bouncy beats make hit singles like "Beep Me 911" and "The Rain" (nevermind the killer sample) define the style. Most of my favorite tracks are before the interlude, but there is enough variety across the hour+ album with high/low energy tracks and guest stars that it doesn't drag.
Some of the magic's probably lost out of cultural context, looking back. Still, kicking back like the album art and listening to this—it's supa dupa fun. Pass the blunt?
P.S. wait, what has Timbaland been up to? Looks like he's still out there... "In 2019, Timbaland began teaching through Masterclass, providing an instructional series on production and beatmaking." 😬
