Prompt: "The oldest song you actually like"
Selected by Boober
"Moonlight Sonata (1st Movement)"
written by Ludwig van Beethoven
Quasi una fantasia, Op. 27, No. 2, published 1802
From third to twelfth grade, I played violin. I played in Carnegie Hall. Last chair.
I was not very good.
My entire family is musically inclined. My siblings play multiple instruments. My aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandmom on my dad's side can all play guitar or piano or some string or brass instrument. My sister has a few songs on Spotify, and my brother is booking a studio session when he gets back from Korea. So I felt like I had to play something.
I have an ear for music. I can tell you if someone's singing is flat or off key... but I had no drive. I didn't practice at all, and didn't learn to read music. I played all by ear, which works super well in elementary school when you play "Hot Cross Buns." But when things get harder, well... my orchestra teacher liked me, so at least that was nice! I stopped senior year because I thought I didn't want to take up the place of someone else who actually wanted to try.
I have my old violin under my bed right now, and I keep thinking maybe I put the money out to get it restrung and try and actually learn. We had a keyboard, and my grandmom had a piano, so I would memorize different songs, and I memorized a good portion of this song, and it always stuck with me. I could probably play the first line of the song if I was in front of a piano, but I always felt like a cheater knowing I didn't actually learn the song.
I've always had a soft spot for classical music, and this song will always be my favorite classical song. It also helped that it's pretty morose, and so it fit in well with my emo teenage self
