Purple, Nate

The success of Purple hinges on Baroness's ability to make metal music that is, at once, not so metal to turn off the normal person who might like a little loud guitar music, but metal enough to make the face tattoo viking people grunt from the backs of their throats in approval. Not metal: screaming vocals that don't really scream all that much. Metal: Songs about swords. Not metal: pastoral flourishes like the ones found in the middle of "Kerosene" and "Chlorine and Wine." Metal: nods to prog all over the fucking place.

Look, here's the deal: If you're at all interested in heavy music, here's your on-ramp. If you like a little melody and craftsmanship to your music about kvelt doom, here's your horse. If none of this appeals to you, you've never owned a black light or a poster, or you've never been a fourteen-year-old boy.
