This Is My Blood: Komes Baltic Porter

Working my way through the list of all the beer styles—found HERE—seemingly endlessly, but what can ya do.

Baltic Porter
(#17)
Exemplified by Komes Baltic Porter

About Baltic porters, Tasting Beer says "no one would mistake them for a stout." Mosher doesn't know who he's dealing with. If you handed me a Komes Baltic Porter, and asked me to name the style of the beer, there's a 60% chance I would've said "stout." Give me one of each at the same time, and I could probably tell you, but that's not happening too often in 2020, so I'm stuck being ignorant.

There's a huge difference between Baltic porters and other porters/stouts/dark and roasty beers—Baltics are lagers, and the rest of them are ales (so I could tell you the difference by taste, but I would have a tough time translating the taste difference into blog words). There's less going on with Baltic porters. They exist to give you the roastiness, and not much else. I would argue that this was to its detriment.

I did have a Baltic porter earlier in the year that I quite liked—Smooth Ride from Triple Bottom. This is most likely because there was an added ingredient in that one, vanilla, which helped mask some of the harsh roasty character.

As with the term "imperial," this style of beer is based on the beers that were shipped from England to Russia in the 1700s (what's up with England being obsessed with sending beer to the Russian Imperial Court? Were they being trumpy and getting blackmailed into doing so? Did Russia have a video of English brewers getting peed on by 18th century hookers?). The recipe hasn't changed in the time since.

I'm not saying it was a bad beer. I'm just saying it was a little much. Give me a dark roasty beer, but let it be refreshing too. Don't punish me with roastiness and neglect the lifeboat.
