Empty Country is a difficult album to dislike, in my opinion. It’s an exercise in nostalgia at some points as it blends a '90s rock sound with a quintessential indie rock sound, and throws a dream-sequence song in there to catch you off guard ("Chance"). There’s even that song about the lady selling bad eclipse glasses knowing her customers will go blind... that one reminded me of "Maxwell’s Silver Hammer." A catchy romp about blinding/killing people. Each song is distinct from the others, in sound and story, and each one makes you want to listen. I was originally looking at Soccer Mommy’s color theory for this week, but avoided it because it sounded like it was going to be real depressing to listen to. Welp, Empty Country has some real downers on here too, but I guess pain is always a driving force for good art.
