Discussion — Week 351: The Silver Tongued Devil and I by Kris Kristofferson
I wonder if there's a book for every Record Club album title. This is the second week in row that we've come across the phenomenon in this space, after Street Love (the book). How far back can we go? Is there a book called Luke's Garage? CREAM? I quit? Freewave Lucifer f<ck f^ck f>ck? (No, yes, yes, I f>cking wish!!!). We're here to talk about music, though. Sorry to distract you with mindless googling about books. Wait, no, one more thing about books—RC alumna (time two) Michelle Zauner is going to be writing the forward for the new edition of Infinite Jest. I don't know where else on the blog to put this breaking news, so here it is. Okay, let's talk about our week with Kris Kristofferson's album. Whatchya think?

Saving space here for discussion re: Zach's list.
Strong slate of reviews today, friends. Mostly in agreement, I think—the music is hit or miss, but the storytelling is top notch. Shout out to all those who told their own stories this morning. That's what this club is all about.
A positive space, this. Much room to discuss who you find attractive, no space to discuss who you do not find attractive. Here is a short list of the RC artists I personally have found most attractive over the years:
Mannequin Pussy (Missy Dabice)
Ethel Cain
SOPHIE
Houndmouth (Katie Toupin)
underscores
Dua Lipa too, though I don't necessarily think there's any room for the mega-popular on this list. I'm not trying to be one of a million sweaty dudes thinking the same thing.
Desperately seeking alternate opinions from our bi and male-seeking friends.
Obvious stamp of approval for the theory of blind spots being the act of making up for the flaws of our parents. Wondering if anyone else thinks that way besides the K*** and F****** kids.
Also, and Zach had to know this was coming: I'm sniffing around for AI-generated material, and wondering whether that Perfume Genius blurb (Perfume Genius being, as far as I've always understood, with no google evidence to the contrary, one single male artist, and not a band) had anything to do with AI.
Shoutout to Stef on her first review. When I met her, one of the first things I learned was that she hated country music. So this is a big step!
Very happy for Michelle Zauner for landing the Infinite Jest gig, but she has also continuously referred to Infinite Jest as "part of the incel canon," which I obviously vehemently disagree with on so many levels, and hate her for that.
Nope! It came from the Tiny Desk concerts. My research for this led me to many tiny desk concerts. RC lives Tiny Desk, apparently. - Z
Also - did you post those 5 specifically bc I didn’t include them? Or would you consider them your Top 5 regardless? - Z
Me copying every blog post into the AI detecting machine
What's good this weekend? Little Soph's 3rd bday family party is tomorrow, so we're gonna be in and out of the house today running errands for that. That's the extent of it! Sunday I'll be working one of my final Sunday shifts, so that's cool.
I’m also an Infinite Jest defender. I’ve heard people call reading it performative and pretentious, but not “part of the incel canon.” That seems extreme
This was a great storytelling album!
Looking at this list made me realize that I have no idea what so many artists look like. Even if I’ve seen them I actively do t remember it.
Maybe I just have a problem with facial recognition, I don’t recognize most actors either and sometimes when I haven’t seen a a friend in a while I worry I won’t recognize them lol (but that hasn’t happened yet.)
Reba above Janelle Monae on the Hot List is mind-bending stuff. Made me do the Dr. Phil-Is-Stunned meme in real time.
one more reason to include footnotes in your music review
i'd LOVE to see the rest of this "incel cannon." i bet its filled with all my favorites
When I disagree about the Reba thing as well, it's NOT because I think she isn't hot. All RC alumni are attractive. It's more like I have seen her so many times in the same exact context that sexiness no longer has anything to do with it. It would be like saying my refrigerator is attractive.
J-Brekkie made the term up! Very much her fault for making "incel canon" google searches connect to IJ! Google it yourself to see!
Re: the six I listed. A little of both. If I'm going out of my way to call a public figure attractive, I don't want to add to a chorus of too many online sweaty horny guys. Also, being mega popular does something to your brain. I would be able to connect with Missy Dabice on an emotional level. Would never be able to with, say, a B. Spears type.
Also Nate read my intro!! Reba is not ranked above Janelle Monae, or below! - Z
Yeah I agrew somewhat about the mega famous thing. I see it a bit differently I think, less about emotional connection for the purposes of this column (although it wasn’t fully devoid of that, Margaret Glaspy and HAIM the most obvious examples) and more about simple attractiveness to me.
100 gecs (Laura Les)
U.S. Girls (Meg Remy)
La Rappresentante di Lista (Veronica Lucchesi)
Music with Gina (Gina Kaz, the only RC alumna I've met in real life, a children's birthday party is no time for flirting)
Gal Costa
