That this kind of revivalist Americana, this kind of effective and impressive wouldn't-it-be-great-if-we-had-been-there-then genre cosplay... look man, it might be the most authentic shit this side of the Triple Frontier, this might be the most raw, uncooked, pure Appalachian folk music this blasted landscape has to offer. I'm not saying that it isn't. I'm just unwilling to do the homework, and to my ears it sounds like the fuckin' rest of the golden-throated hat-wearers looking to make a living on the airwaves WXPN, on the Rolling Stone year-end best-of list. This is a Nathan A**** problem, not a Nathaniel Ratliff problem.
I forget if I've talked about this here or anywhere else, but my biggest theory about music criticism is that almost all music, 99.7 percent of it, is fine, and it becomes an exercise in explaining how and why it is "fine." Let's all save ourselves some time. It's fine.

I don't necessarily disagree, but they do say that exercise is good for you.
To answer the question, this is the first time explicitly laying out the theory, but not the first time hinting at it:
