Yearlong Song Challenge, Day 99: Maeve

Prompt: "A song about heart beating faster or heart issues or something about the heart doing something that's noticeable to the narrator of the song"

Selected by Maeve

"Hummingbird Heartbeat"
Katy Perry

Katy Perry is going through it. She's being attacked from all angles, but I can't blame anyone but Katy for refusing to read the room. She really makes way more career errors than any of her peers. The reason she's the target of so much resentment is her new single, "Women's World." It had such a social media buildup to the drop of the song, and the world was left wondering... "this????" It's reductive, simple, and sounds like something that should have been left off her first album. In a world full of evolved pop stars who have talked about real social issues eloquently but can also release a fucking bop... maybe Katy doesn't need to release new music. She seems stuck in a time where she was at her peak, therefore making this single feel extremely dated. The song feels like she wrote it for the 2016 Hillary campaign, you know what I mean? It also comes along with a cringey video that's apparently satire... because you know when satire's successful, the artist has to release a statement about how the video is satire. It's bad.

Also, she's working with Dr. Luke, who Kesha took to court for drugging and raping her. The music world stood behind her, with Lady Gaga and Kelly Clarkson giving testimony about Dr. Luke. During this trial, Katy Perry was a character witness for Dr. Luke, claiming that Kesha defamed his image with this trial. How fucking shitty. Imagine working with him in 2024!!

I've said it many times before, but I'll say it again: The Sweeties are history's greatest monsters.
