Thanks to Gary for a metric sledgehammer of nostalgia, particularly from track 4 to 8 or so. Despite being familiar with most of these songs from the radio, it's a first listening to the whole album (I was even more broke in '94). There are interesting discoveries (extended riff at the end of "Chump") and odd discoveries (The "take me away to paradise" song is followed by "Welcome to Paradise"?).
Generally, though, it's that end-of-the-world punk feeling of the '90s and what made Green Day what I fondly remember them for 30 years later. Listening to this gives me Tree of Life-style memories. Vague mosaic composites of youth running, and running bored. Maybe a decade younger than the narrator in the songs when these were peak popular, but punk rebellion starts early.
It's hard not to listen and see how this touched nearly every pop punk outfit after, either in inspiration or rebellion. And then American Idiot was 10 years later? And I think they said their next album was 2024? Pop culture is wild.
