Sam Smith and their album Gloria is a grower. It grows in power and potency. In intricacy and eccentricity. And grows from somber to triumphant as you journey through it.
I'd previously only experienced Smith in confusing them for Ed Sheeran. Both were kind enough to sing a duet on this album to let me directly compare and contrast their vocals. Smith sings better.
I am encouraged by how good this music is. How it works for the particular struggles that Smith personally has endured and (I hope) overcome, and how it connects on a more universal level. The arrangements were cool and different. And the featured players were all value adds.
I ultimately believe this album will be important, and I hope they can joyfully accept all the laurels they deserve.
