Somewhere, an HBO exec is wishing time really was a flat circle because this album should have been on the soundtrack for Season 1 of True Detective.
Listening to Anarchist Gospel feels like listening to a tour of the American South—the mystery, jazz, and heat of Louisiana, the undeniable Nashville singer songwriter mixed with country guitar shredding, a dash of Texas twang, and yes, the big southern baptist church gospels. Give me all the slide guitar, harmonica, and dobros you have!
Because this album succeeds so well in setting a tone and telling a story (like Nashville's best artists often do), the one area where I feel like it fails is in production quality. It deserves a few sharper edges and cleaner lines, even if Sunny War is an anarchist.
