First, some clarifications from the past couple of days.
As promised, I used my headphones today so I could catch what Barbara Jean was yelling from her car when she told Brock to hurry up: "C'mon Brock, justice waits for no one!" Which I guess is not the least funny thing anyone says in the episode. This also made me realize that BJ isn't picking Brock up, she's waiting in the car. Why was she waiting in the car? I wonder if it was a logistics thing for the family, a logistics thing for the show, or an indication that there is more bad blood between BJ and Reba than I imagined there'd be in Season 5.
Also, I have confirmed that the little boy's name is Jake. It's said multiple times during his 45 seconds of screen time, so my apologies for calling him "Matt" yesterday. We had previously confirmed that Jake is Reba's son, not grandson, but here's a related question: does Cheyenne have a kid? I ask this because there is a split-second clip of Cheyenne carrying a baby in the opening credits that I just noticed today. Could it be possible that Cheyenne and Van have a child together, and s/he isn't mentioned ONCE this entire episode? I don't know. There is a suspicious amount of toddler toys in the background of the house shots. Let's put a pin in this.
Finally, I think I have cracked the case regarding the family's surname. Judge Stephen Tobolowsky refers to BJ as "Ms. Hart" (or "Heart"? probably "Hart) at least one time, and it was today's lightbulb moment for sure. BJ seems like the type of woman to take her husbands last name, even though his ex-wife is keeping the last name, right? I'm not commenting on the politics of name-changing—take your husband's last name or don't, or make him take yours, this ain't the '60s and people should be able to do what they want—I'm just piecing together the clues and making sure that Reba H. doesn't just coincidentally have a maiden name that also starts with an H, ya feel me?
Two additional questions for the day, that we will address at a later date. One: what in the world does Cheyenne mean when she says "when we helped those people after the hurricane?" Something must've happened in Season 3 or 4, some major plotline, that might be helpful in shading in Cheyenne as a character. Two: what does Van mean when he says that Cheyenne "tells all [her] problems to the people at [her] meetings"? My first thought is that he is referring to AA. Is Cheyenne a drug addict? Is that why she wants to become a drug and alcohol counselor? INTERESTING development that I will be keeping an eye on.
I was going to go off on Van today, because it's my third viewing and, with at least 99 viewings left to go, I have already decided I hate this motherfucker. But maybe let's save it for tomorrow.
