I've hated John Mayer ever since my high school graduation. A strong statement for the artist I picked to celebrate my birthday... It's because my high school graduation party was the same day as his concert and all my friends left my party to get loaded in a parking lot then sit on the lawn and listen to "Daughters" by him. But it seems like I have in fact changed my mind on him.
I've had this album downloaded on my phone for the past few months and I've always enjoyed its melancholic calming vibes. Who hurt him?? Is this album about Katy Perry?? Jennifer Anniston?? Will we ever know? It's hard to admit, but dang I'm happy someone broke his heart if it meant he wrote this album.
"Last Train Home" is a certified bop. Easy driving music with bright synth and guitar. Shoutout to previous Record Club pick Maren Morris with excellent background vocals at the end of the song.
"New Light" is just the right amount of groove in a current song. It has some great lil one liners and that same elevator rock that's featured on the rest of the songs. It's also a fun kicky music video if you want to see more of J May.
I really enjoy the phrase "Why You No Love Me" and will try to start using it more. Just another breakup song that sounds like you can play at a beach bar.
What a kicky single girl anthem is "Til the Right One Comes." Fun on-the-nose lyrics with the same general musical tone of the rest of the album. Catch me playing this on repeat as I swipe on bumble.
Lots of guitar riffs which I believe are good? I mean heck they let him play in the Grateful Dead. Overall, I did really enjoy this album for what it is... soft rock. Will definitely be listening to this by the pool this summer.
